Referee who sent off Casemiro appointed for Manchester United’s clash at Brighton

Manchester United face Brighton and Hove Albion on Thursday evening in a difficult Premier League clash away from home.

The contest may have been made even more difficult by an unwelcome refereeing appointment.

Andre Marriner will take charge of the clash at the Amex. It is the first time he has officiated Manchester United since early February at home to Crystal Palace.

This match was memorable for his decision to send off Manchester United midfielder Casemiro for his part in melee between the two teams.

Casemiro was slapped with a three game ban for this sending off. This meant that when he received another debatable red card against Southampton the following month, his later ban was increased to four games.

Erik ten Hag is unlikely to be impressed with the Marriner appointment. He told The Sun: “Everyone is reacting, Crystal Palace players and Man United players, and not only Casemiro.

“There was one of the players, he did even worse than Casemiro. You have to be consistent.”

The Palace fixture was the only United game Marriner has refereed this season. Manchester United did win the game 2-1 in the end, but Casemiro’s suspension surely ended up costing all three points in the subsequent game with Leeds, which ended a 2-2 draw.

Casemiro’s red card for the incident continues to look bad. Jack Grealish escaped a similar incident last week without even getting a booking.

United’s last visit to Brighton ended in a 4-0 loss last season. The side will be keen to avenge that loss – it just won’t be straightforward, especially if there is another unjust sending off.
