Rasmus Hojlund has revealed that former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has offered support during his first two years at Old Trafford.
It has been a turbulent season for Manchester United and Rasmus Hojlund has continued his struggles in the front of goal.
Hojlund ended a 21-match goal drought in United’s 3-0 win over Leicester City last week, but there are still fears over whether he has what it takes to lead the attacking line in the future.
United have been linked with an array of strikers ahead of the transfer window, including Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, who thrived under Amorim.
The 22-year-old striker won’t give up on his dream of playing for United because he still has time to develop into a better player. United fans will hope his recent goal helps give a boost in confidence for the remainder of the season.
Rasmus Hojlund and Peter Schmeichel enjoy a strong relationship
United’s first-team has quite a strong Danish contingent at the moment.
Patrick Dorgu became the latest Denmark international to join United in January. He joins a dressing room consisting of Christian Eriksen, Chido Obi and Hojlund.
Hojlund has endured some difficult times at United, but he admits that he has been in contact with former United stopper and Treble-winner Peter Schmeichel to glean wisdom on life in Manchester.
“Peter helps me occasionally and listens to how I’m feeling – both when things are going well and when things are going badly,” Hojlund told Danish outlet Tipsbladet.
“I wouldn’t call him a father figure, but he helps a lot because he’s been through it before.
“He knows what it means to play for Manchester United as a Dane. It’s nice to have someone to spar with on that front.”
By getting advice from the likes of Schmeichel, Hojlund hopes to overcome bad periods as a professional football. It’s important to remember he is still young, inexperienced at the highest level and learning his craft as a centre-forward.
Most of the Danes at United are young players, expect Eriksen who is likely to depart in the summer, and Hojlund is keen to help the young talent push through.
Hojlund speaks about getting the same help in the dressing room from Eriksen and he hopes to pass that on to the likes of Obi, who emerged from United’s academy this season.
The striker added: “It’s also about finding your own path.
“Christian [Eriksen] helps me and the others, but if anyone needs advice, I’m available – for everyone here and for Patrick [Dorgu] and Chido [Obi].”
Hojlund excited by Ruben Amorim project
Hojlund accepts that it has been a difficult season for United in his interview.
It doesn’t help that he has been struggling in front of goal, but that is something he can now put behind him.
Hojlund revealed that the new project under Amorim is “incredibly exciting” after admitting that Erik ten Hag was one of the reasons he moved to Old Trafford.
He added: “This season has been mixed, both for me and for the club. There’s been a coaching change, with Ruben Amorim replacing Erik ten Hag, and I’m focused on this new project because it’s incredibly exciting.
“Erik was one of the reasons I moved to Manchester United. He was a talented coach, but things didn’t work out – that’s just how football is.”
