Manchester United have suffered two embarrassing home defeats in as little as four days.

Manchester United fell victim to a Manchester City masterclass last Sunday. Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and ultimately Pep Guardiola picked apart the Red Devils, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Then it was Eddie Howe’s turn. His Newcastle side made sure Erik ten Hag had the same fate, with a 3-0 victory for them in our own backyard sending United crashing out of the Carabao Cup.

A miserable week for everyone surrounding the club.

Raphael Varane’s Champions League prediction looks laughable

Raphael Varane spoke in a press conference before the 3-2 loss against Galatasaray, where he made a bold prediction.

When asked by a journalist whether his side could potentially go all the way and win the Champions League, the veteran French centre-half responded:

“Yes, I think so, I think the quality is in the squad,” said Varane. “The competition is difficult, you have to take care of every detail, but we have a team of quality and of good mentality.

“We have to make some improvements, it was not the start to the season we expected, but I still believe we have the quality to compete with the best teams in the world. I think the competition is about details and you have to be efficient to win the competition.”

‘We have to make some improvements,’ certainly didn’t appear to happen.

United can’t win the Carabao Cup, never mind the Champions League

This statement was said by Varane on the 2nd of October 2023. Now, on the 2nd of November, United fans have a Carabao Cup hangover after being brutally knocked out by Newcastle.

This begs the question. How can we win the Champions League if we can’t even win the Carabao Cup?

Varane’s quotes were also said before the Galatasaray loss, which further cemented ideologies in fans’ heads that European glory was a stretch this season.

A lucky win at Copenhagen has turned the tide ever so slightly, but let’s be honest – it ain’t happening. The World Cup winner’s comments now look a bit silly.
