Former Manchester United star Raphael Varane announced his retirement from football last month.

Just months after leaving Old Trafford as a free agent, Raphael Varane called an end to his 14-year career in September.

Manchester United announced that Varane was leaving in May and the French defender left on a high note after lifting the FA Cup in his final game.

Varane decided to join Serie A club Como over the summer but he suffered a serious injury just 23 minutes into his debut.

The 31-year-old was then left out of Como’s official Serie A roster and Varane announced his retirement from football days after.

Raphael Varane appointed as Como board member

Varane recently opened up on his United exit and revealed that he had been battling with injuries to his knee for close to a decade.

Now he has hung his boots up, Varane explained his retirement plans, revealing he saw himself as more of a club president than a potential coach.

His wish has quickly become true with Como announcing on Saturday that Varane had been appointed as a board member of the Italian side.

The Serie A outfit, who are managed by Cesc Fabregas, revealed that Varane will work closely with the Head of Development and Head of the Education Program.

The former France international’s unique role will include helping young athletes “prepare for life beyond football”.

Could Raphael Varane return to Man United?

Varane has wasted no time getting back into the football industry after his retirement announcement.

As a defender, he was calm, composed and classy and he is now looking to take those characteristics to the boardroom where he seems well-suited.

It is not out of the realms of possibility that Varane, who joined United for £34m in 2021, could one day return to Old Trafford and play a part in the club’s new long-term project under Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Varane was – and still is – adored by United fans and would be welcomed back to Manchester with open arms.
