An improved defensive performance was just as key, with Raphael Varane and Tyrell Malacia replacing Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.

United stars celebrate
This was Raphael Varane’s first start of the season and the centre-back was thrilled to be back in the side.
Varane hailed the Old Trafford crowd as ‘incredible’ for helping to inspire the Red Devils’ players.
Diogo Dalot also thanked the fans for the support, and dedicated the victory to the crowd.
The Portuguese defender was impressive, and kept his composure in the second half after a harsh yellow card at the end of the first.
Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Elanga also added to the voices celebrating on social media after the game.
Fernandes captained the side, while Elanga impressed in the first half, providing the assist for United’s opener.
The duo also hailed the home atmosphere for driving United on towards victory, with the team holding on amid a late Liverpool fightback.
