Rangnick says Manchester United must sign hungry and talented players

Ralf Rangnick has set out his goals ahead of Manchester United’s crucial summer.

While Rangnick will not be permanent manager, he will be working as a consultant, and will have a joint say in the club’s future direction.

Rangnick has vast experience working as a technical director in Germany and his input could be invaluable.

Rangnick’s comments are at odds with United’s previous strategy, where the priority was to target bi name players. He believes this is inessential.

Rangnick told SkySports: “Something needs to be rebuilt in the summer.

“The team could do with some more highly-talented, hungry players who really want to develop their own careers.

“I don’t think it should be that much about signing big names. I wouldn’t mind big names! But for me it’s important about being competitive, hungry, seeing a move to a club – and I have always believed this – not only as a big contract, a big-name club, but the next logical step in his career.

“If this happens, then you have a completely different level of motivation, aspiration, inspiration to play for whatever club that is. That should be the major target for the summer transfer window.”

Back to square one

It is pretty frustrating for United to be back in this position, having to rebuild. This was the project sold to fans under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The difference is this time, United aim to do it properly with Rangnick guiding the project and a new, top manager at the helm.

Some of the players signed under Solskjaer could still play a part, Jadon Sancho could be here for years to come. Who knows if the likes of Amad or Facundo Pellistri can go onto contribute either.

Others, like Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka could find themselves surplus to requirements from thew new rebuild.

Rangnick is right to point out United need young talent, but those players have to be headstrong and able to cope with criticism, as the media and some fans can be unforgiving when results continue to nosedive.
