Rangnick says Fred’s recent improvement hasn’t surprised him

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has praised the recent performances of Fred ahead of today’s clash with Everton.

Fred clawed United level against Leicester last time out and has had six goal contributions in his last 13 appearances compared to five in 87 before that.

In an interview with club media, Rangnick was asked about the Brazilian midfielder at a time when rumours continue to swirl about midfielders Erik ten Hag might bring in if he is appointed.

Ruben Neves and Kalvin Phillips are two potential options but Rangnick said he is happy with Fred right now, as he goes into the Everton clash weaker in midfield without Scott McTominay, who is injured.

“I’m not surprised to be honest because he’s the type of player that if you want to play a proactive style of football then he has a lot of assets that you need,” said the German of Fred.

“He’s always trying to win balls and is always on the front foot and he’s also one of the most underestimated players in possession of the ball.

“He can score goals, give assists and that’s why he’s also regularly playing for Brazil. I’m not surprised at his development.”

Fred is probably better when he is able to get on the front foot and snap at the heels of opponents, trying to win the ball back.

He is still a level below what United really need to compete at the top level, with his passing often erratic and his eagerness to win the ball sometimes leaving him out of position.

But this afternoon, he and Bruno Fernandes will probably play the box to box roles in the 4-3-3, and the Brazilian’s energy will be doubly important in the absence of McTominay.
