Ralf Rangnick has conducted his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

Rangnick faced the media at 1.30pm and the briefing was streamed on United’s official app.

He was asked about Diego Simeone’s tenure at the club, which has been hugely successful on the whole but has seen them drop off this season after winning the league last year.

Rangnick has made it clear he’s a huge fan of the Argentine manager, who has twice led Atletico to the Champions League final, in 2014 and 2016.

“In those 11 years, he won trophies with a clear identity, with a recognisable playing style and I don’t think this has changed in the last years,” said Rangnick when asked about Simeone.

“Atletico are always an emotional side and this reflects the character of the manager. Diego Simeone is probably one of the most emotional managers in Europe.

“The style and the way that his teams have always performed reflects those emotions that he has always tried to bring into the team.

“This is what it’s all about. We need to match the levels of energy and emotion in both games. I will prepare my team for that kind of challenge. It will be physical and emotional, especially tomorrow when we play away. We have not played each other yet but I have always admired what he has done with Atletico.

“He has changed their club completely into one of the most respected clubs in Europe.”

Rangnick is right to say that Simeone has sculpted a side in his own image and they do not tend to give anyone an easy ride in a big game, especially in front of their own fans.

United are really looking for someone who can come in and shape the club to their will and provide similar success, and connect with the fans again.

Simeone’s style is different to the one United ideally want but it is clear to see why there would be respect there from Rangnick. The Argentine is one of the best in the world.

These are the kinds of opponents United want to face on a regular basis and Rangnick is clearly relishing the challenge.
