Rangnick overlooking Juan Mata has brought confusion to squad, claims report

It’s looking increasingly likely that Juan Mata’s eight-year stay at Manchester United will come to an end in June.

The 33-year-old will probably join Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani in leaving the club on a free transfer.

It did seem like United’s number eight was set to bring his time in Manchester to a close last summer before signing a new one-year deal in July.

The new contract made little sense at the time and his lack of game time and involvement has vindicated the pointlessness behind the club’s decision.

The former Chelsea man has made just four appearances this season, none of which have come in the Premier League.

It’s hard to see where his next outing will come from barring a final appearance to mark his farewell to the club.

Despite clearly not forming a part of Ralf Rangnick’s plans, Mata is an exemplary professional who always carries a smile and doesn’t kick up a fuss.

In fact, the Athletic report that the former Spain international is training ‘very well’ and has no fitness issues.

The same report states that there is confusion surrounding Mata and why interim manager Rangnick has not given him a chance to contribute.

Several La Liga clubs have already made enquiries to sign the World Cup winner as a free agent in the summer, but Mata could well explore playing in a different country.

The Athletic’s Spanish reporter Dermot Corrigan has stated that Mata still feels he could make an important contribution for a club in one of Europe’s leading leagues.

Mata has contributed 51 goals and 47 assists in 277 games for United, after arriving in a helicopter to Carrington following his £37.1m (BBC Sport) move from Chelsea under David Moyes.

The departure of Juan Mata will free up a first team place for the club’s talented youngsters and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him return to the club in an ambassador role once he calls time on his glittering playing career.
