Manchester United’s interim boss Ralf Rangnick has explained his team selection for tonight’s crunch clash against Liverpool.

The German has brought in Phil Jones for his second Premier League appearance of the season. The 30-year-old will play in a back three alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

United’s number four hasn’t played for two-and-a-half months since coming off the bench in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough.

Rangnick to MUTV on Jones: “He should be an important part of our backline, he played well when he played in that position against Wolves, I had to decide between him and Eric Bailly and that’s why I went with him.”

It’s the first time Jones and David de Gea have started at Anfield in the same side since October 2011.

The German said Scott McTominay is only on the bench for an ’emergency’. The Scot hasn’t trained with the team since his injury.

Rangnick said: “He told me he would be ready for 10 and 15 minutes at the end if necessary.”

The 63-year-old has made four changes to the side that beat Norwich City 3-2 on Saturday.

As well as Cristiano Ronaldo coming out of the side, Alex Telles, Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho are the other changes to the starting line-up.

In come Jones, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford.
