QPR boss Beale lauds Ethan Laird after netting first senior league goal

QPR boss Michael Beale has lauded Manchester United loanee Ethan Laird after the right-back netted his first senior league goal.

Making his fourth straight start for the Championship side since joining on a season-long loan, the 21-year-old looks to have settled into his new environment and is producing influential performances.

Fresh after registering an assist in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Watford, QPR’s number 27 scored his side’s second in last night’s 3-1 win against Hull City at Loftus Road.

Much to Beale’s delight, Laird clinically slotted home a cross with his weaker left foot from fellow attack-minded full-back Kenneth Paal’s cross.

It was the Manchester United academy graduate’s first league goal at senior level. Laird scored for Manchester United’s Under-21s in the EFL Trophy against Rotherham United back in 2019.

Speaking after last night’s win which moved QPR into the fourth and final play-off spot after seven Championship games, Beale raved about his full-backs and is excited to see how much better they can both get.

Beale said: “You can really see what Kenneth [Paal] and Ethan [Laird] are now bringing at both ends of the pitch.

“I think there is more to come, that’s the exciting thing. I said to them after the first 20 to 30 minutes when we get the goals that do you need to go [forward] all the time, but they are young men and they get excited – they feel they have the energy.

“It’s us boring coaches that want to put the shackles on them a bit because you’ve done that to get in front.

“But I’m delighted and as I said, I think there is more to come.”

No player from either side attempted more shots on goal than Laird (3) last night, according to WhoScored.

Laird will be hoping to maintain his impressive form on Saturday when QPR travel to face Swansea City, the side that the right-back spent the first half of last season on loan with.
