Pundits cast brutal Europa League prediction for Man Utd, Rio Ferdinand is regrettably in agreement

The only trophy Manchester United can win this season is the Europa League after reaching the knockout phase.

Manchester United are back in Europa League action on Thursday night when they travel to Real Sociedad for the first leg of their round of 16 clash.

Although United are unbeaten in the Europa League, it has been a disappointing campaign for the Reds, who are sitting 14th in the Premier League.

Last time out, United lost on penalties against Fulham to miss out on a place in the FA Cup quarter-final and they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup under Amorim’s watch in December.

The Europa League is the only chance United’s first-team have of salvaging their season.

Rio Ferdinand among pundits to write off Manchester United

A huge game against La Liga side Real Sociedad is on the horizon and United must travel away from home for the first leg.

Ahead of the round of 16, TNT Sports’ punditry panel cast their verdicts on United’s chances of winning the Europa League.

Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Peter Crouch and Ally McCoist were all in agreement that Tottenham would go further in the competition than United.

Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of Agree or Disagree UEFA Special, McCoist said: “I think Spurs will go further [than United].

“I think Spurs could win it. If they get key players back, they’ll get a boost. I think they can win it.”

Cole and Crouch were both in agreement with McCoist, while the latter doesn’t think Ange Postecoglou’s side can go all the way.

“I don’t believe they can win it,” the former Liverpool and England striker said. “But I do think they can get further than United.”

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand agreed that Spurs will likely go further than United in the Europa League.

“I’m just going with my heart over my head,” Ferdinand said before going on to agree with the rest of the panel.

“I’m going to agree with you. I’m going for Spurs to go further if I use my head.”

While United have struggled this season, it seems like the pundits are happy to overlook Tottenham’s form – which has not been any better. Both teams have 33 points after 27 league matches.

Manchester United need to replicate 2021 Europa League feat

The only previous knockout tie in UEFA competition between United and Real Sociedad was in the 2020/21 Europa League round of 32.

United won 4-0 on aggregate despite drawing 0-0 at Old Trafford.

Goals from Bruno Fernandes (x2), Marcus Rashford and Daniel James secured the win in San Sebastian.

United are facing a Real Sociedad side positioned 9th in La Liga and they were on the receiving end of a 4-0 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday.

A win away from home on Thursday night would set United up to qualify for the next round.
