PSV preference is to sell Cody Gakpo in summer as new report states he is 'key target' for Manchester United

Cody Gakpo seized his opportunity on his World Cup debut for Netherlands by scoring the opener in their win over Senegal.

Gakpo’s future has been a hot topic of discussion ever since the summer, with Manchester United strongly considering a move.

The Dutch forward told The Times he even held talks with manager Erik ten Hag.

A new report from The Mail claims Gakpo is considered a ‘key target’ for the January transfer window, with United now needing to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Independent had reported in summer that United would only have pulled the trigger on a deal if Ronaldo was sold. The star remained and plans to sign Gakpo were shelved.

All this has now changed with Ronaldo’s exit. The club’s need to sign a striker has increased.

PSV preference is to sell Cody Gakpo in summer

PSV Eindhoven’s preference is to sell Cody Gakpo in the summer, reports Dutch outlet Eindhoven Dagblad.

The report states: “PSV hopes to sell him only after this season, but for more money than the bids of this summer.”

The Telegraph had reported United had the option to sign Gakpo for £34 million.

Fabrizio Romano now claims the price will be more like £40 million.

If he continues to star at the World Cup, the fee could be further inflated, as more clubs take an interest.

PSV’s preference to sell in the summer also could place a premium on a deal in January, with an increased fee demanded for the inconvenience of losing the player mid-season.

The unknown factor is how far Gakpo will push for a move. He is keen for a new challenge, and it will be tough for PSV to deny him a dream move for United over the sake of a few million.
