Premier League referee set to officiate first ever Manchester United game v Burnley

Manchester United take on Burnley on Saturday night in a late kick-off at Turf Moor.

One of the many big problems for Manchester United this season has been the woefully inconsistent refereeing.

This week we saw a handball awarded against United, for a far less blatant incident than the one the Red Devils did not get away at Tottenham.

So all attention will be on the referee this weekend when Manchester United visit Burnley, which is being broadcast on TNT Sport.

Tony Harrington appointed referee

The Premier League have announced Tony Harrington has been appointed referee for Manchester United’s match at Turf Moor.

Harrington was promoted to referee Premier League matches in 2021, however, until this point he has never officiated a Manchester United first team game.

Last weekend he was refereeing in the Championship, taking charge of Hull City v Coventry, and he was then the fourth official for Newcastle’s win over Brentford.

There was one game in 2009…

Harrington has refereed a Manchester United reserve game before, way back in 2009, per Transfermarkt.

An Ole Gunnar Solskjaer-managed reserve side beat Sunderland 4-0 at Moss Lane, with Joshua King scoring twice, along with a brace from Magnus Wolff Eikrim.

Fabio da Silva, Zoran Tosic and Federico Macheda were part of the United line-up.

The Manchester United side being officiated by Harrington this weekend will have a lot more star power, and it will be in a real cauldron of an atmosphere late at Turf Moor.

But hopefully, Erik ten Hag’s side can make light work of Burnley, and wrap up a similar 4-0 win.
