Manchester United’s fixture list for the 2022/23 season has been confirmed, with the Red Devils kicking off against Brighton.

The match on August 7 will be held at Old Trafford, and attention will now turn to how Manchester United will line-up for the fixture.

There are plenty of variables to consider. How many signings will Manchester United make before then? (At the current rate, not many).

Who will impress and seize their chance in pre-season, and which players will Erik ten Hag decide to get rid of?

United’s line-up for first fixture

All of these factors need to be considered, and rather than come up with a fanciful dream line-up of seven or eight new signings, we are beginning to resign ourselves to a more modest initial overhaul.

United will probably end up with four or five signings, but with the transfer window open until September 1 this year, the Red Devils are currently on track to be among the late movers – they certainly are not the early ones.

We are predicting three signings – although it could just as easily be one, or none, at the rate the Red Devils negotiating team is progressing.

In goal, David de Gea’s position seems assured, at least for this season, and we are not anticipating any changes to the back four – even though there desperately needs to be. We expect Jurrien Timber will stay at Ajax, and United will wait on him, until January or next summer.

This will present a back four of Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Diogo Dalot – and we would anticipate that by the end of August, there will be a new right-back on board, just not in time for the first fixture.

The midfield is where changes really come into play, with neither Fred or Scott McTominay making the team.

We say this out of hope than true conviction, that Manchester United will get the Frenkie de Jong deal over the line. The Times report negotiations are ongoing.

De Jong would anchor a new-look midfield, with free agent Christian Eriksen taking on a playmaking role alongside him, with Bruno Fernandes in the mix too. The Athletic report United have offered the Dane a deal.

This might not be a trio United could role out each and every week, but there is enough talent there between the three to make it work in Ten Hag’s system.

Last season’s top goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo will lead the line with Jadon Sancho on the left, and potential new signing Antony on Manchester United’s right wing. Goal Brasil report talks are expected.

The Brazilian is tipped to be United’s big attacking signing, and he will provide extra balance to the team. His trickery could light up an expectant Old Trafford on his debut.
