Potential Lisandro Martinez return date for Manchester United pencilled in as centre-back recovery progresses

Lisandro Martinez will not play for Argentina during the international break but there is some hope that he could make his Manchester United return during the Premier League meeting with Brentford at the end of this month.

When the fans’ favourite centre-half suffered another potentially serious injury during February’s 3-0 victory over West Ham at Old Trafford, there were concerns that – like against Sevilla nearly 12 months earlier – Lisandro Martinez’s season had been brought to a premature conclusion.

So reports suggesting that the former Ajax ace could be back before April Fool’s Day will come as a colossal sigh of relief, even if there may be concerns that Martinez – like with Luke Shaw – is in danger of being rushed back ahead of schedule due to the needs of under-pressure Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

Lisandro Martinez should be back soon

The Athletic reports that the trip to Brentford on March 30th is a potential return date for a man who, due to his importance to the side both tactically and defensively, remains arguably Ten Hag’s most important player.

His recovery from a sprained knee ligament is understood to have progressed very well.

The Athletic adds that – despite his shock call up for Argentina’s March friendlies with El Salvador and Costa Rice – there are no plans for Martinez to feature for the World Cup holders. He will, however, look to complete his recovery with the Argentine medical staff.

Martinez – who’s personality and leadership skills have made him a massive part of the Red Devils dressing room – recently travelled with the United squad for the recent Manchester derby too, despite not being fit enough to make the bench.

More good news for Manchester United

News of his potentially imminent return, meanwhile, is another big boost for Ten Hag. The Man United boss will have been delighted to welcome back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the long-term absentee Mason Mount, both of whom were spotted in training this week.

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand, meanwhile, claims to have been told by Ten Hag that top-scorer Rasmus Hojlund will feature against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday too.
