Paul Scholes sums up Man United fans’ thoughts over strange routine during win over Wigan

Paul Scholes has summed up Manchester United supporters’ thoughts on one rather bizarre aspect of the team’s 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United picked up a win in football’s oldest cup competition and will face either Newport County or Eastleigh in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Goals from Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes were enough for the victory in Lancashire as United look to aim for back-to-back appearances at Wembley for either the Semi-final or the final of the competition.

There was one rather peculiar aspect of the game that raised a few eyebrows and drew the ire of fans and ex-players and that was their corner kick routines.

United’s odd corner kick routines

Time and time again, when the Red Devils had a corner, Fernandes would jog over to take the corner and would be followed over by Marcus Rashford.

However, Rashford would stand on the byline looking like he was asking for the short ball to feet to run at the Wigan defence who may not have been properly set for the pace and trickery on offer from the 26-year-old.

In the end, however, when Rashford went short for these corners, Fernandes would launch the ball into the box and the Wigan defence would head these corners away rather easily.

One former United hero summed up fans’ thinking at full-time with Paul Scholes writing on his Instagram story that “short corners are s___”.

United’s new routine

What is clear following their win over Wigan in the FA Cup is that this new routine that they have developed is simply not working and they need a new one.

It seemed a rather strange decision at the time and it was certainly not fruitful and whoever came up with this routine, Eric Ramsay has been the set-piece specialist before, needs to change it up a bit.

Throughout Ten Hag’s reign at the club, set-pieces have been a consistent problem for the Red Devils and they have to improve this going forward.

United, unlike previous seasons, don’t have much height in their team and are therefore more susceptible to conceding set-pieces and less likely to score them.
