The midfielder is one of the biggest legends at Manchester United, making him uniquely positioned to comment on the club, with a respected authority.
Unfortunately for Ruben Amorim and various United players, Paul Scholes rarely has many nice words for them at the moment.
Before a ball was even kicked this season, Scholes predicted United might struggle, admitting that he isn’t convinced.
Well, Scholes’ predictions have come to pass, although the Red Devils are doing worse than he might have imagined. Now, he has spoken on whether Amorim should still be in a job.
Paul Scholes shares Ruben Amorim verdict
Scholes has never been the biggest fan of Amorim, not being convinced by the manner in which the coached last season.
Now, with pressure growing around the head coach, Scholes has again gave his verdict on Amorim.
Speaking with FourFourTwo, Scholes has answered the question that is burning around the United fanbase right now: whether Amorim should be given more time.
“You talk about managers being sacked, and none of us like doing that,” Scholes stressed.
“But if he’d have been sacked on Sunday, I think we’d have all been saying ‘Yeah ______ hell it’s about time, there’s no surprise to it’.
“I think he did have an excuse last year. He couldn’t train – well, he could train, but every three days they had a game. He’s had everything now, they’ve spent £200m, and he’s got three weeks in between games to do everything he wants to do and get his style across.
“There’s just no sign of it getting any better, is there? Look, you’d like him to do well, but he’s got to win games of football, and he’s not winning enough games of football to warrant doing the job at the minute.”
Manchester United must act now with Ruben Amorim to salvage the season
The next fortnight is going to be decisive for United’s season, with a couple of potential outcomes.
Firstly United might replace Amorim over the upcoming international break, which few would dispute is warranted after the disaster 11 months he has had in charge.
Last season, Erik ten Hag was sacked too late and Amorim struggled as a result as he arrived in the busiest period of the season and too far into the campaign to turn things around.
Alternatively, United might beat Sunderland and Amorim might implement system changes to make picking up wins beyond this weekend much easier.
Either way, United need to be ready and Amorim is on the thinnest ice he ever has been.
