Paul Scholes says Scott McTominay faces a ‘a big few weeks’ to secure his Manchester United future

Paul Scholes says Scott McTominay must prove himself over the next few weeks at Manchester United to secure his place at the club for next season.

Scholes told an interview with Webby & O’Neill that Scott McTominay has a real chance to show he can fill in for Casemiro.

He says he has heard the rumours linking McTominay with an exit to Newcastle, via The Telegraph, and admits he ‘hates’ to see academy players leave the club.

With Casemiro suspended for the next Premier League games, Scholes is calling on McTominay to step up.

A big few weeks for Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay scored twice in Scotland’s win over Spain in midweek, netting four goals in his last two international matches.

Scholes is hopeful this will lead to him returning to Carrington with added confidence, to play a big role over the coming weeks.

He said: “Scotty’s the perfect choice [to replace Casemiro]. He’s coming back with loads of confidence. He’s a really good player.

“I hate seeing homegrown talent leave the club, but sometimes it has to happen.

“It’s a big few weeks for him now. If he can come into this team make it look as if Casemiro isn’t missed, then hopefully next year he will still be with us.”

Scholes added that he is optimistic McTominay will have been learning from Casemiro in training to take aspects into his own game.

It’s unclear whether he will be selected this weekend in Casemiro’s absence. He is battling Marcel Sabitzer, who was present in first team training yesterday, shaking off an injury knock.

United have three games with Casemiro out, with the Newcastle game followed up by matches against Brentford and Everton.

At some stage, McTominay will get opportunities, and while it seems like an uphill battle, he has a chance to demonstrate that he should stay at the club.

What will also factor in, is what McTominay wants. If he is only regarded as a back-up at United, and he has an offer of regular football elsewhere, he may elect to push for a move this summer, regardless of how well the next week goes. He has been selected to start only four games in 2023.
