Paul Scholes says he played with someone at Man Utd who was even mouthier than Roy Keane

It’s often said that the current Manchester United side is missing “strong characters”, and how strong Sir Alex Ferguson’s sides were can be known from the fact that one player put Roy Keane to shame!

Since breaking into the side as a part of that famed “Class of ’92”, Paul Scholes saw the Man Utd squad turnover and move from one era to another multiple times.

There aren’t many Man Utd players better placed to compare and contrast these eras in terms of quality and character.

Roy Keane regularly turns up as someone who was a loudmouth in the best way possible to drive standards, but Scholes has now claimed one player at Old Trafford even put him to shame.

Paul Scholes on player mouthier than Roy Keane

People would be surprised to realise that the pundit version of Roy Keane isn’t remotely as vocal as he was as a player.

Keane was a captain figure in the truest sense as a model professional, but also someone who wasn’t afraid to call out a drop in standards.

Therefore, for Scholes to say a player was mouthier than Keane is quite a claim, which is exactly what he did while speaking on The Good, The Bad, and The Football podcast.

Scholes was asked who the ‘mouthiest player’ he ever played with was, and surprisingly, the name that came to him first was Wayne Rooney.

He said: “Who would just cause trouble in an empty house? Who is there? I think Wazza [Wayne Rooney] was a bit like [that]. Do you know what, Waza wouldn’t cause trouble, would he? But if there was something he’d have a go at you, of course, he would.”

Wayne Rooney’s steely mentality was key

The response by Scholes is relevant for the current Man Utd squad, which has been accused of lacking the mental fortitude to dig itself out of trouble.

As Scholes said, Rooney would have a go at you if something was not going according to plan instead of cowering and accepting the failure.

That is the kind of mentality needed to succeed at Old Trafford, even more so now with the advent of social media, where everything is magnified.

Players in the current setup realise only after joining Man Utd how big the club actually is, and someone like Rooney got the pulse correct immediately.

It’s why he ended up as the highest goalscorer in the history of Man Utd, and, somehow, still remains underrated because of his selfless play.
