Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has admitted he has mixed views on new goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

After signing Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens on transfer deadline day, Manchester United face a big call this weekend.

United return to action in the Premier League against Manchester City, a daunting yet exciting potential debut fixture.

Paul Scholes on Senne Lammens

Paul Scholes believes Senne Lammens faces an arduous task if he makes his debut in the Manchester derby.

Head coach Ruben Amorim must decide between Lammens and Altay Bayindir, and Scholes says he has mixed feelings about handing the new signing a debut.

He told Sky Sports: “I do actually think it’d be tough for any lad to go into that game, but you have to start somewhere.”

The United legend believes that Amorim’s United team are not an ideal one for any new goalkeeper to come into.

“He needs confidence given to him straight away. He is coming into a team that concedes chances, so it’s gonna be difficult for him.

“But again, it’s a platform for him to show how good he is.”

Why Scholes comments could be misguided

Paul Scholes would be right to acknowledge that Manchester United are not a winning team right now. Ruben Amorim has yet to win back-to-back Premier League games for the club – although has a chance to put that right this weekend after the victory over Burnley.

But are United really a team that allow a lot of chances, like Scholes suggests?

Data provided via BBC Sport shows that over the past 10 Premier League games, only Manchester City have allowed fewer shots at goal than Manchester United.

This could provide Lammens with a stable situation to come into – and not the worrying one that Scholes describes.

Whoever starts in goal for United will be under great scrutiny – while City have their own dilemma between James Trafford, and handing a debut to Gianluigi Donnarumma.
