Paul Scholes believes that Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen should start ahead of another Red Devils star as the Dane’s good form continues.

Erik ten Hag sent on Christian Eriksen at half-time to try and spark Manchester United into life as they wilted to half-time after failing to create any chance of note.

The Danish midfielder proved to be just the spark that the Red Devils needed as it was his pinpoint cross into the penalty box which was headed home brilliantly by Harry Maguire.

Now, ex-United midfielder Paul Scholes believes the experienced Dane should start ahead of summer signing Sofyan Amrabat.

Scholes on Eriksen

Eriksen, similar to the home win over Brentford, certainly made a big impact when he was called upon to rescue the game for the Red Devils and Scholes believes he now warrants a start.

“(The) Second half was a lot better but you bring the better footballers on,” Scholes said on TNT Sport. “You bring Christian Eriksen on, a much better footballer. No disrespect to Amrabat, he’s a stopper he’ll do his kind of thing. But he won’t build up play.

“Christian Eriksen will. You saw the runs being made, all of sudden Fernandes is in the game, Garnacho too. Eriksen will find these players. For a 15-20 minute spell, they looked like a proper team again.”

Amrabat’s role

Scholes is right, Amrabat is a stopper. Arguably, United have struggled in the defensive midfield department for over 10 years, up until the signing of Casemiro in the summer of 2022.

However, the Brazilian simply has not been up to the levels required this season. With Amrabat coming in, United have not conceded nearly as many cutbacks as they were conceding prior to the Moroccan’s inclusion in the team.

Barely five minutes after Eriksen came on, United nearly conceded a cutback. A fine stop from Andre Onana denied Lukas Lerager and kept the scores level.

Now, Eriksen should start and proved once again why he can be a useful asset. However, Amrabat has to start alongside the Dane, otherwise the defensive security that the former Fiorentina man offers, won’t be there.
