Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves have given their verdicts on whether they believe the time is right to sack Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United suffered a calamitous 4-3 defeat against FC Copenhagen and will now need to win against Galatasaray in Turkey for the Red Devils to have any chance of qualification from the division.

Erik ten Hag has received criticism for the substitutions he made during the game in Denmark with Rasmus Hojlund being withdrawn from the game for Mason Mount with 10 minutes to play.

Ten Hag looked like a man under pressure and was visibly frustrated when he trudged off the pitch.

Scholes and Hargreaves verdict

Speaking on TNT Sports, Scholes gave his verdict on Ten Hag and whether the time is now to replace the Dutchman.

“I don’t think we can afford to do it anymore. I think we’ve got to let this fella go with it. I think he’s been good up to this point,” Scholes said.

“He’s got a little bit unlucky tonight, you have to say that with the [Marcus Rashford] sending off. They’re going to play better teams than Copenhagen but I thought there was a little bit of fight there tonight. Just lacking that bit of leadership.”

Hargreaves sided with Scholes and thinks the Red Devils have to back the 53-year-old.

“They’re not good numbers and [are] obviously bottom of the Champions League group after four games as well,” Hargreaves said, “but I’m with Scholesy, they’ve got to stick by him [Ten Hag] and build something.

“Keep sacking managers is not the solution here.”

United’s decision

With the international break approaching, a defeat against Luton Town this Saturday may well spell trouble for Ten Hag with regards to his future at Old Trafford.

The club are on the verge of elimination from the Champions League and could well be out of the race for Champions League football next year.

However, with the ownership situation set to change soon, sticking with the Dutchman may well be the best solution at this moment in time.
