Paul Pogba gives his verdict on where Cristiano Ronaldo stands in the GOAT debate
Paul Pogba shrugged off claims that Cristiano Ronaldo is a “problem” at Manchester United and lauded his teammate as the “best striker in history”.
It comes with the territory and it’s nothing he hasn’t being accustomed to throughout his career, but ever since Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford in the summer, a lot of the team’s struggles have been placed on his shoulders.
No one was expecting the Reds to be in a dogfight for a Champions League spot come March when Ronaldo capped off a summer transfer window which also saw Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane come through the door.
But we are where we are and we need to do everything we can to clinch the final Champions League qualifying spot.
United’s legendary number seven helped Ralf Rangnick’s side move back into fourth spot after scoring a hat-trick in yesterday’s 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking to BBC Sport straight after the game, Pogba denied claims of Ronaldo causing unrest and lavished the five-time Ballon d’Or winner with praise.
Pogba said: “Cristiano did what he does best. [He’s] never been the problem, you have the best striker in history in our team, it cannot be a problem.
“Today again, he showed why he is Cristiano Ronaldo and why we got him. The performance from him and all the team was very brilliant.”
If it wasn’t for the man who is now FIFA’s all-time leading goalscorer with 807 goals, Manchester United wouldn’t have qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League, let alone the Champions League.
Ronaldo carried the Red Devils through to the last-16 and his goals in the Premier League have kept United in with a chance of making the top four.
