Micah Richards explains what he saw from Patrick Dorgu’s Man Utd performance against Newcastle
Manchester United surprised Newcastle last Friday evening after Ruben Amorim shook up his tactics, with the Red Devils switching to a four-man backline.
The Red Devils had warmed up in Ruben Amorim’s preferred formation of 3-4-2-1 before shifting to a 4-2-3-1 set-up for the actual match against Newcastle.
Patrick Dorgu played in a much more advanced position in United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle, with the wing-back playing in the right-sided role of the system.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Micah Richards felt that Dorgu played well in his position on the right flank, despite it being an “unfamiliar” role for him at United.
“But look at the difference,” he said.
“They didn’t play well, but everyone knew the positions. Everyone knew where to be, to head the ball away, went to press.
“Okay, Dorgu was good, he was playing in an unfamiliar position, a little bit higher up in one of the [No] 10s, but just in terms of everyone knowing their jobs, they got the clean sheet.”
Lisandro Martinez also catches Micah Richards’ eye after Man Utd’s 1-0 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford
Lisandro Martinez made his first United start of the Premier League season and the 27-year-old Argentine defender impressed with his performance last Friday evening.
The 2022 World Cup winner played 88 minutes against Newcastle before United manager Ruben Amorim withdrew him and replaced him with Tyler Fredricson.
“It was plain to see everyone [playing better in the new formation], although I thought Martinez played well […],” Richards added.
Amorim has been easing Martinez back into United first-team action in recent weeks after the former Ajax ace returned from a long-term knee injury.
