Patrice Evra urges Ruben Amorim to change Manchester United captaincy, candidate has shown ‘resilience and leadership’

Patrice Evra believes Ruben Amorim should consider stripping Bruno Fernandes of his captaincy role at Manchester United.

There has been a lot of talk about leadership – or the lack of it — at Manchester United over the past 10 years.

The blame shouldn’t be on one player because a successful football team requires a collection of leaders.

Harry Maguire was initially given the armband in 2019/20 and struggled to deal with the pressure that is part of such a role. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would later reveal that several members of his United first-team squad rejected the chance to become captain, which makes it sound like the opportunity fell on Maguire’s lap.

But take nothing away from the England international, who has turned his career around in terms of performances since Erik ten Hag awarded the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes.

It took away some of the responsibility that weighed Maguire down and affected the standards he produced on the pitch.

Patrice Evra wants Harry Maguire made captain again

It’s a clear sign that Maguire’s stock has risen when former professionals are suggesting he should be made United captain again.

Football reporter Fabrizio Romano shared an update on Instagram following United’s decision to extend Maguire’s contract by a further year.

Former United left-back Patrice Evra was quick to comment and he pulled no punches at the expense of Fernandes.

Evra wrote: “Give him [Maguire] the armband back!!!! After all he been trough [sic] showing resilience [and] leadership.”

Maguire has had his setbacks throughout his time at United, but he has continued to carry himself like a model professional, which is why he deserves such respect.

Ruben Amorim will demand more from him between now and the end of the season.

Wise decision to extend Harry Maguire’s contract

Ineos have shown with their deals at United that they are planning for the long-term future.

We seen that when United announced deals for youngsters such as Leny Yoro, Chido Obi and Sekou Kone in the summer.

The decision to extend Maguire’s contract rather than offer him a new deal is a further example of Ineos’ long-term planning.

Maguire is 31 and not getting any younger.

Letting him leave for free would open United up to losing three senior centre-backs next summer – Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof could also become available as free agents.
