Pair of strikers linked to Man Utd now labelled as strongest partnership in world football

Premier League giants Manchester United looked at both Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez over the summer with the Inter Milan pair now arguably the best strike partnership ‘in the world’.

Given that Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram have both proven themselves capable – nay, thriving – in an old-school front two, it should perhaps come as no surprise that the pair have hit it off quite brilliantly at the Serie A leaders.

Lautaro fired Inter Milan to the Scudetto in 2021 alongside Romelu Lukaku. Thuram, meanwhile, was the perfect foil for Alassane Plea at Borussia Monchengladbach.

And, since joining forces at the San Siro, Lautaro and Thuram have threatened to take their respective games to a whole-new level, mustering 26 goal contributions between them already this term.

The contrast between Inter’s free-scoring frontline and Manchester United’s own misfiring attackers, then, could hardly be more stark.

Is Inter Milan’s attack the world’s best?

“Are they the strongest couple in Europe? Maybe even in the world!,” former Italy international Oscar Damiani tells Tuttosport, Thuram firing Inter above Juventus and into top spot with a winner against Roma on Sunday.

“In terms of quality and movement, yes (I expected Lautaro and Thuram to thrive). But maybe I didn’t expect this many goals.

“Marcus is scoring many goals. More than in the past. The partnership with Lautaro is simply excellent.”

Manchester United’s frontline misfiring

Thuram’s career-best performances in black-and-blue will do little to quell the frustrations of a disillusioned Manchester United fanbase, Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Red Devils turned down the chance to sign the silky Frenchman on a free transfer over the summer.

World Cup winner Lautaro Martinez had also been considered at one stage, per Calciomercato and the ever-reliable United Muppetiers YouTube channel.

Since Thuram joined forces with Lautaro at Inter, Marcus Rashford is the only member of Erik ten Hag’s existing frontline to score even a single Premier League goal. Martinez and Thuram have 17 combined in Serie A alone.

Whether you believe the Inter pair are anywhere near the world’s best or not, they are certainly on another level to United’s misfiring attack right now.
