Owen Hargreaves raves about Anthony Elanga after scoring equaliser against Atletico Madrid

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has praised the “fearless” Anthony Elanga for “galvanising” the Reds.

Ralf Rangnick’s side looked to be heading to Old Trafford for the return leg having to overturn a 1-0 deficit, but Elanga came off the bench to score a late equaliser.

The 19-year-old had only been on the pitch for five minutes after replacing Marcus Rashford, but the Swedish under-21 international scored with his first touch past Jan Oblak, after being played in on goal by Bruno Fernandes.

The teenager’s instant impact saw him come in for high praise by Hargreaves after the match.

Speaking about Elanga live on BT Sport, Hargreaves said: “Anthony Elanga gave them some urgency, young kids are fearless and he galvanised United.”

United’s number 36 spoke confidently after the game and shared what Rangnick wanted him to do to make the Atletico defenders scared.

United’s goalscorer told BT Sport: “I think it was my first touch as well. I have dreamt of moments like this, scoring in the Champions League against top European teams like Atletico Madrid is a dream come true.

“It is only the first half [of the tie], we have to be ready for the second half at Old Trafford.

“I told you how calm and cool I am and whenever I am given an opportunity I want to repay the manager and give 150% every time I step onto the pitch.

“I just do what I can do, I want to be the best player on the pitch and I appreciate the boss.

“He [Ralf Rangnick] said to me to make the defenders scared and run in behind. When I get the opportunity to take it. I wanted a good result for the fans because they came a long way.”

After making such a devastating impact off the bench, Elanga will no doubt be targeting a place in Rangnick’s starting line-up for the second leg at the Theatre of Dreams in three weeks time.
