Former Manchester United and Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves has given his thoughts ahead of the crunch group stage match between the two sides this Wednesday.

The Englishman joined United back in 2006 and was a cult hero at the club despite suffering from a swathe of injury issues during his time at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Red Devils are back in Europe’s premier club competition after a year out and will be hoping to progress further than they did last time, a rather tepid last-16 exit at the hands of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

Wednesday night’s game at the Allianz Arena could go a long way in deciding where Erik ten Hag’s side will finish in the group and the midfielder has singled out who could be the difference for the Red Devils.

Hargreaves singles out two players for United

Hargreaves has made his prediction for the game and his prediction for the game may well match the mood among the United faithful.

“Bayern are certainly favourites at home, especially after signing Harry Kane. But United are obviously still a threat.”

As well as this, the former midfielder highlighted two players who he believes will cause issues for the German side.

“They’ve got a quality attack: Marcus Rashford is a great counter-attacking player, Bruno Fernandes plays brilliant balls in behind, so United have a lot of chances.

“However, if Bayern are in their normal form, I expect them to win the match at home.”

Manchester United are out of form

The Red Devils’ away form against the bigger sides still remains atrocious going into the new season with two defeats away from home against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

A win in Munich could kickstart their season but it certainly won’t be an easy task and you wonder if United will stick with the diamond in midfield.

Either way, it promises to be a huge night in the German capital.
