Owen Hargreaves hits out at Man Utd star, almost as much to blame for goal as Andre Onana, ‘didn’t want the ball’

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana dropped another clanger in the win over Plzen.

Unlike his error in the loss to Nottingham Forest, Andre Onana’s mistake against Plzen was not costly.

Manchester United fought back to win 2-1, with two goals from substitute Rasmus Hojlund.

And the happiest man on the pitch was Andre Onana – but was the blame to be shared for his latest mistake?

Matthijs de Ligt criticised

Andre Onana’s error against Nottingham Forest was 100 per cent his fault – the only factor he could blame was the terrible wind and rain.

Against Plzen, the blame was to be shared with another player, claims former Red Devils ace Owen Hargreaves.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Hargreaves believes Manchester United centre-back Matthijs de Ligt was almost as much to blame for Plzen’s goal as the goalkeeper.

Onana gave the ball away for Plzen to score, with Hargreaves believing De Ligt should have helped him out by offering a better passing option.

The former midfielder explained: “Both Andre Onana and Matthijs de Ligt could be at fault there, but Onana a little bit more.

“De Ligt really didn’t want the ball. In the end, Onana plays a poor pass. But Ruben Amorim wants his centre-backs to go in there and recieve the ball.

“De Ligt is not comfortable receiving it on the half turn and Onana plays a poor ball and on the wrong side.

“It’s difficult position for a centre-back to be in, [But] if the manager tells you to do something, you are going to do it.”

How De Ligt fared

Matthijs de Ligt had a solid game in general, with Plzen’s attack quite well shackled by Manchester United’s three-man defence.

Plzen only had two shots on target, one of which was the close range attempt when Onana gave the ball away.

Matthijs de Ligt is now preparing for his first ever Manchester derby, when he will be looking to shackle Erling Haaland, and it’s very unlikely he will be left out.

The error with Onana certainly gives United something to think about, and De Ligt and his teammates will study it back and see if there us anything they could have done differently.
