Alvaro Fernandez’ lung-busting runs from left-back have become a trademark in Manchester United’s academy games and last night’s UEFA Youth League wasn’t dissimilar.
The 18-year-old was once again galloping up and down United’s left-hand side against the Borussia Dortmund youngsters.
The Spanish under-19 international is one of those players who looks quicker when he is travelling with the ball at his feet and often leaves the opposition players trailing in his wake.
Such is Fernandez’ attack-minded approach, he is constantly looking to maraud forward and be a constant outlet in Neil Wood’s side.
However, such is the former Real Madrid youngster’s eagerness to sprint forward and contribute in our attacking phases of play, he sometimes shows naivety when neglecting the defensive aspects of his game. This was on display in United’s under-23 game against Derby on Friday night too.
Getting the defensive and attacking balance right is something that Fernandez will naturally develop as he continues his footballing maturity.
But striking the balance will be crucial in his bid to crack the Manchester United first team and compete with Luke Shaw and Alex Telles.
Against Dortmund’s under-19s, there were several times where Fernandez was caught high up the pitch leaving a gaping hole behind him which the travelling side could exploit.
This meant that United’s left-sided centre-back Rhys Bennett was dragged out of position into the left-back role.
A big part of the modern day full-back’s game is the recovery runs, but instead of busting a gut to get back into position, Fernandez cut a static figure following the turnover.
With four goals and six assists to his name this season for the young Reds, Fernandez could become a formidable left-back if he takes the same pride in his defending as he does as his attacking.
Fernandez has frequently trained with the Manchester United first team at Carrington this season and his defensive skills will be being honed in those sessions.
After the Reds resisted the temptation to loan Fernandez out in the January transfer window amid Championship interest, a season-long loan move next season could be sanctioned.
Playing regular first team football at senior level, where he can showcase his attacking talents, as well improving his defensive side of the game could prove the best move to continue Alvaro Fernandez’ burgeoning development.
