While Manchester United toiled in Madrid and scraped a draw, there was one positive for the Red Devils 900 miles away in Burnley.

Tottenham lose game in hand

Tottenham upset the form book to beat Manchester City at the weekend with a 3-2 away win. That showed what they are capable of, before their usual inconsistency struck.

Turf Moor is not an easy place to go and Tottenham found this out the hard way last night.

A 71st minute Ben Mee goal gave Burnley a 1-0 victory and rendered Tottenham back at square one with this defeat.

This match was one of three games in hand which Tottenham had on United.

Spurs only have two games in hand left now, and are seven points behind Ralf Rangnick’s Red Devils.

The big turning point for both teams comes on March 12, when Manchester United host Conte’s Tottenham at Old Trafford.

But there could be more drama before they get there, with Antonio Conte seeming to show his unhappiness at the club after the defeat.

There are other sides in the mix too, namely Arsenal, who face fellow contenders Wolves on Thursday night.

This is one of three games in hand the Gunners have on United, and they are four points back.

But as Spurs showed last night, sometimes it is better to simply have points on the board, especially with the league as competitive as it is.

On a hard fought night for United in the Champions League, this was at least one extra reason to be slightly positive.
