One Manchester United star named in EA Ultimate Team of the Week after superb performance v Liverpool

Manchester United defied expectations to gain a point on the road at Anfield at the weekend.

If only last season had been so straightforward. Manchester United’s players produced a disciplined and organised performance away at Liverpool to claim a 0-0 draw. It could even have been a win, had Erik ten Hag‘s side been more ruthless in attack.

The key to success was organisation and defensive strength, led by a new partnership at the back of Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane.

Both players stood firm and really impressed, staying calm under pressure, and Varane was a particular standout on his first Premier League start since September.

Raphael Varane in EA Team of the Week

Raphael Varane’s performance has led to him being named in the EA FC24 Ultimate Team of the Week.

The team is selected from top performers across the world’s top leagues, and featured only two Premier League players.

One was Manchester United centre-back Varane, with upcoming opponent Mohamed Kudus of West Ham the other English based player to be selected.

It is nice recognition for the Manchester United defender, highlighting his impressive display.

Manchester United needed every player to step up in difficult circumstances and Varane used all his quality and experience to deliver a truly top performance.

Varane future uncertain

Raphael Varane has been out of favour under Erik ten Hag this season, but has stepped up recently amid more defensive injury problems.

His contract at United expires in 2024, although the club do have the option to extend to 2025. As it stands, he will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January 1.

According to Christian Falk, Varane’s former club Real Madrid are showing an interest after defender David Alaba suffered a torn ACL.

We will have to see how that develops. But amid a need to raise cash for new signings, United would be smart to at least listen to offers in January for Varane, despite the clear undoubted quality he brings, and displayed at the weekend.
