Manchester United gave a strangely confident and controlled performance to beat Everton at Goodison Park.
Many had predicted a tough time for Manchester United against Everton on Sunday. Take Paul Merson, for instance, who forecasted a 2-1 win for the Toffees.
Everton failed to lay a glove on Manchester United, helped by Alejandro Garnacho‘s knockout blow, courtesy of his spectacular overhead kick.
United won the game 3-0, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial scoring in the second half.
Garnacho praised
Alejandro Garnacho’s incredible goal was enough to earn him a spot in Garth Crooks’ team of the week for BBC Sport.
Crooks said: “I saw it but I’m not sure I could believe it. The overhead bicycle kick by Alejandro Garnacho for Manchester United against Everton was amazing. The timing and execution of the technique was as good as I’ve seen. It will probably win goal of the season and we are only in November. It was that impressive.”
He then went onto receive some criticism, or a backhanded compliment, whichever way you want to frame it, with Crooks asking what else he contributed.
He said: “The mere fact that lad did very little else throughout this match should tell you just how good the goal was. It’s goals that count and this was a belter.”
What else Garnacho contributed
Crooks has a point that goals matter, and to that end, no, Garnacho did not add a second or provide an assist.
But his assessment is a little unfair. Garnacho had 35 touches in 72 minutes, attempting a further two shots, although did miss the target with them both.
He made two defensive clearances, completed one dribble, made four ball recoveries, and won three free-kicks.
But it’s the goal that people will remember this game for, and rightly so.
