Leaks have existed at Manchester United for a long time.
From information leaking out of the dressing room to rain leaking through Old Trafford’s roof, there hasn’t been a shortage of leaks at Manchester United.
There are some of the problems Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans to amend as co-owner. Ineos have taken control of football operations at United, introduced multiple cost-cutting policies, and Manchester United Supporters’ Trust fears a season ticket price hike.
Over the past 12 months, there has been many changes at United, including the controversial cut of 250 staff.
We can only expect that only time there will be more changes as Ineos look to make United a success – on and off the pitch – again.
After gross mismanagement from the Glazer family, Ratcliffe has his work cut out for him.
Manchester United staff threatened with sack
Ineos are not happy with information being leaked out of the club.
This is likely to concern the news that more redundancies could be on the way at United.
However, a report from The Telegraph claims chief executive Omar Berrada has issued a warning in email after launching an investigation into succession of leaks.
It is understood the 580-word email was sent to employees earlier this week as details of the radical cutbacks and potential redundancies at United have emerged. This only shows how reckless Ratcliffe can be as a business owner as he’s done this at other sporting enterprises.
Staff were warned “additional measures” are now being put in place to prevent the details of changes being released before official club announcements. The leaking only comes back to hurt fellow employees, who are worried about their job security after seeing so many other colleagues lose theirs at the club.
The Telegraph quotes the email: “Anyone disclosing information outside of the club is breaching their obligations of confidentiality, and we are very clear that this will be considered gross misconduct,” read the email, seen by Telegraph Sport. “To protect the club and its colleagues, additional measures are being put in place to prevent future breaches of confidentiality and also identify any persons responsible.”
In theory, that means someone leaked the email to The Telegraph, as pointed out by former United academy star Alan Tonge.
Berrada went on to warn staff about journalists contacting them via WhatsApp and social media.
Ineos stamping authority at Manchester United
Ineos are having to make difficult decisions at United.
However, it’s important to note that the root of the problem remains the same because the Glazers are still majority owners. It’s hard to see real change unless that changes.
By trying to clear out information moles, Ratcliffe and co are trying to stamp their authority on the club.
In essence, knowingly leaking club information is treachery and deserves harsh punishment.
It happens at the biggest clubs in the world but Ineos need to keep a lid on it.
