Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quizzed on signing Manchester United duo, praises ‘very good players’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been asked whether he intends to sign any players from Manchester United after becoming Besiktas manager.

The Manchester United legend left Old Trafford in 2021 after he was sacked as manager following a poor start to the 2021/22 campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer initially returned to United in 2018 after Jose Mourinho was axed. He took the job on an interim basis before being offered a permanent deal in 2019.

Like those before him, including Louis van Gaal and David Moyes, Solskjaer met the same fate as other managers of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

United have been unable to win the Premier League since Ferguson retired in 2013.

Solskjaer has recently started a new chapter in his managerial career by taking charge of Turkish Super Lig outfit Besiktas.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quizzed on Manchester United transfers

It was inevitable that Besiktas would get linked with United players following Solskjaer’s appointment.

Journalists wasted no time asking Solskjaer whether he would look to his former club to recruit new players before the January transfer deadline.

Speaking to Asist Analiz, Solskjaer responded to a question about Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, with both players linked with moves away from Old Trafford this month.

The 51-year-old said it was natural he would be linked with players from the Premier League due to his connections with United as a player and manager, but has quickly insisted there has been no contact.

“I’ve come from Manchester United, so there will be transfer news like this. Casemiro and Rashford are very good players, but I haven’t had any contact with them,” Solskjaer said.

Solskjaer confirmed there has been no contact with Rashford or Casemiro, but that could change over the coming months now he is in charge.

He added: “I enjoyed my time at Manchester United. That chapter is closed. I’m looking forward to working at Besiktas now. The Bilbao game will be tough, but we are ready.”

Solskjaer could take advantage of Manchester United fire sale

Although Solskjaer stresses there has been no contact with United players, while name-checking Rashford and Casemiro, he would be naive to miss out on the opportunity to sign players that would strengthen Besiktas.

Rashford and Casemiro are unlikely to switch to the Turkish league, but Ineos will listen to offers for most players this summer due to the club’s financial situation.

Solskjaer’s man management is arguably his strongest trait, so loaning young players to Besiktas may be a sensible plan moving forward while the Norwegian remains in charge.

Christian Eriksen could be a free agent in the summer and Victor Lindelof is another United player linked with a move away.
