‘Oh my word’… TNT commentator reacts to what Marcus Rashford did in 53rd minute v Galatasaray

Marcus Rashford’s form has been under scrutiny this season and his performance against Galatasaray was a mixed bag.

Marcus Rashford was the creative force behind Manchester United’s opening goal against Galatasaray, setting up Rasmus Hojlund’s brilliant opener.

It was his third assist of the season, and it has to be worth noting that no Manchester United player has more.

With all that in mind, he didn’t quite get it right in the second half when presented with a golden chance to break the deadlock with the score tied at 1-1.

Marcus Rashford lets counter-attack go to waste

A superb counter-attack in the 53rd minute saw substitute Christian Eriksen play a sumptuous first-touch pass to release Marcus Rashford.

He was presented with a great chance to score one v one, before he saw Bruno Fernandes, making it two v one.

Rashford hesitated for a moment, and then tried to play in Fernandes for a tap-in.

The problem was, his pass lacked precision and conviction, and it was intercepted by Galatasaray’s defender Sacha Boey at the last moment.

The groans from a tense Old Trafford crowd could probably be heard back in Turkey.

Reaction to Rashford moment

The moment was a big talking point on TNT Sports, with co-commentator Glenn Hoddle stunned by Rashford’s errant pass.

He took the view that Rashford should have taken the shot.

Hoddle said: “It’s [the pass] got to be absolutely perfect. For me he’s got to drill it, the goalkeeper’s not set. Oh my word what a chance

“Last year 30 goals he scored, he wouldn’t even have thought about passing.”

Perhaps he’s right. It’s reflective of his lack of goals so far this season. Rashford has only scored once, and this was back at the start of September.

Hojlund shows clinical qualities

There was a different moment 10 minutes later as Rasmus Hojlund picked up the ball inside his own half after a slip from Davinson Sanchez.

Hojlund powered towards goal, shrugging off Galatasaray defenders, and despite support from his teammates, he didn’t even think about passing the ball, and dinked it over the goalkeeper to score his second of the game.

Even that wasn’t enough, sadly, with Manchester United capitulating, going onto lose 3-2.
