Newcastle 'vehemently deny' move for Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson’s proposed move to Newcastle United appears to be off. For now at least.

The MEN had claimed in an exclusive last month Henderson was ‘closing in’ on a move to Newcastle.

This has been put on pause, perhaps permanently.

Newcastle ‘vehemently deny’ move for Dean Henderson

The Telegraph report Newcastle are not planning on making a move for Henderson, adding that they have made no attempt to sign him, and do not see this changing.

The report references ‘senior sources’ at Newcastle who ‘vehemently deny’ any kind of agreement with or for Henderson is in place.

Eddie Howe’s side are not currently planning to address the goalkeeping position this transfer window.

What is the next step for Henderson?

An early transfer window move for Henderson would have been a definitive outcome for the goalkeeper, who is United’s current back-up.

With just three appearances in 2021/22, Henderson needs a minimum of a loan move this summer to try to revive his World Cup hopes.

Newcastle had seemed like an obvious landing spot for him due to the finances they have at their disposal.

Hopes United had of getting £40 million for the goalkeeper seem unlikely unless another big-money suitor comes to the table.

Henderson may have to stay and compete with David de Gea, and he will have a fresh start under new manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag is not afraid to make difficult calls, even dropping Ajax regular Andre Onana for the title run-in, and David de Gea’s starting place next season is not assured, especially with debate raging over his strengths and weaknesses.

A likely outcome for Henderson is that he stays, and ends up getting sent on loan late in the transfer window. But as of now, all options are in play.
