Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has several injuries to deal with ahead of a Premier League clash against Manchester United.

Once Manchester United get their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon out of the way on Thursday night, Ruben Amorim’s attention will quickly move to the next Premier League match.

The Reds travel to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle on Sunday.

Although United have nothing to play for domestically, there is an opportunity to dint Newcastle’s chances of securing a Champions League spot.

The Magpies, who ended a 70-year wait for a trophy by winning the Carabao Cup this season, are enjoying a strong campaign. They are currently fifth in the Premier League table with a game in hand over fourth-placed Chelsea.

In December, United suffered a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle, which means the hosts are looking to do the league double over Amorim’s side this weekend.

Eddie Howe comments on Newcastle’s growing injury list

Newcastle continued their winning run against relegation-bound Leicester City with a 3-0 victory on Monday night, but they were without two key players for the match.

Anthony Gordon had served the final game of a three-match ban, but he was not named in Eddie Howe’s squad due to injury. He remains a doubt for Newcastle’s upcoming clash with United.

“Anthony Gordon wasn’t close [to be available for the Leicester match]. He hasn’t been able to train yet,” Howe told reporters at the King Power Stadium.

“He is still feeling the effects of that tackle with England. We hope that we may see him soon, but I have got no certainty on that.”

Furthermore, Joe Willock is recovering from a concussion and is unlikely to return in time to face United.

Howe added: “Joe’s concussion means that I don’t think he will make the weekend.”

Newcastle are also without Jamaal Lascelles, Lewis Hall and Sven Botman.

Manchester United injury list

Although Kobbie Mainoo did not make the matchday squad for the Manchester derby, Ruben Amorim provided a positive update on the midfielder’s recovery last week.

It means United have been able to shorten their injury list in recent weeks, with help from Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro, who have both returned to United’s defence.

Amorim will hope that more players can return to fitness before the end of the season because he is still without key players.

With the Reds aiming to go all the way in the Europa League, United fans will be eager to see Amad Diallo return to full fitness. The Ivorian has been a big loss since picking up an ankle injury in February.
