Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has vowed the Red Devils will win the second leg against Atletico Madrid.

United drew 1-1 at Atletico thanks to a late equalising goal from youngster Anthony Elanga.

Matic was a second half substitute as United fought back from conceding an early headed goal to Joao Felix.

Speaking to MUTV, Matic said: “We respect them, but we know we represent one of the best clubs in the world and we will go through.”

The Serbian also had kind words for Anthony Elanga, commenting: “He is polite, respectful, and he is the future of our club.”

Elanga, 19, was fearless with his performance and seized United’s one and only chance, and finished coolly past experienced goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Matic deserves credit too

Matic came on in the second half to make his first appearance in more than a month. He played a key role in helping United get back into the game.

The Serbian was direct with his passing, unafraid to get on the ball and send incisive passes forward which asked questions of the Atletico defence.

For a player who is used so rarely, Matic made a real case for more regular game time with his display. With lots of big games coming up in the Premier League too, the veteran still has a role to play, while also emphasising the need for United to find a long term replacement for him as he showcases the value of a top defensive midfielder.

He gave United a better shape, allowing Fred to get forward, and Bruno Fernandes was able to concentrate on looking ahead, rather than dropping deeper to help the midfield, and the Portuguese star provided the late assist.

Matic’s comments about Elanga speak volumes for how highly the squad respect the youngster, on and off the pitch.

The young Swede has earned it, and deserves the praise coming his way. With all the glowing tributes to his character, it is unlikely he gets carried away by his latest success.
