Nemanja Matic has defended Harry Maguire and believes that criticism on social media may have affected his time at Manchester United.
Matic left United at the end of last season, departing to Italy to be reunited with Jose Mourinho at Roma.
But in a recent interview with Football Daily, Matic gave his thoughts on his former club and in particular the club’s captain Harry Maguire.
He believes that the consistent criticism the England international receives is massively unjustified. More below.

Matic opens up on Maguire
Matic had the following to say about the 30-year-old.
“I can understand why he’s playing for England as he’s a fantastic player. I remember the first season he played almost every game and he was one of the best players”, the Serbian told Football Daily.
“The problem with modern-day football is if you have play two or three bad games, with social media it’s so easy to be criticised. Maybe that affected him, for sure.
“But, he has to think only about his job. In football, everything can change in a few weeks. His situation doesn’t look great, but at the moment he needs to remain focused.
“Harry is a very professional footballer and a very good player. We will see what the future brings for him.”
The backlash Maguire does receive on social media must take its toll on him. The Serbian definitely does have a point, when Maguire first came to United he started brilliantly.
This may suggest a huge dip in confidence, which could very well be affecting his overall game.
Hopefully, the £80 million man can sort whatever demons he’s fighting out and rejuvenate his United career.
