National media slam Man Utd ace for ‘anonymous’ display

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has been slammed after Denmark just about scraped past minnows San Marino.

A number of United players were in action on Tuesday night with the international break drawing towards its close.

Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire were in action for England as they beat Italy 2-1 whilst Casemiro tasted defeat with Brazil, falling to Facundo Pellistri’s Uruguay.

Others were in action too and one United player escaped an embarrassing result – but not some stinging criticism…

Christian Eriksen slammed by Danish media

Denmark faced minnows San Marino on Tuesday night, a game few expected to be much of a contest.

San Marino are ranked dead last in the FIFA World Rankings – 207th out of 207 nations having only ever won one game in their history.

Denmark were expected to coast to victory but whilst United striker Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring, San Marino incredibly found a leveller through Alessandro Golinucci – their first competitive goal in two years.

Yussuf Poulsen spared Denmark’s blushes, finding a winning goal as the Danes secured a narrow 2-1 win, escaping embarrassment.

The Danish press have been left very unimpressed and turned on playmaker Eriksen in the aftermath of Tuesday’s win.

Ekstrabladet suggested that Eriksen was ‘totally anonymous’ when he was supposed to be Denmark’s ‘creative brain’ – especially against San Marino.

Tipsbladet rated Eriksen at just one out of six, claiming that his performance was a case ‘hide and seek’ as he struggled despite his talent.

“It simply cannot be right that Christian Eriksen, with his talent, does not show himself more in such a match. Instead, a form of hide and seek was played at times on Eriksen’s part. Instead, it was someone who came on in Wind who created chances. Show yourself now, Eriksen,” they wrote.

Bold weren’t impressed either, suggesting that ‘you simply expect more’ from a player like Eriksen against ‘the world’s worst national team’.

Manchester United need Eriksen to step up

United brought in a couple of midfielders over the summer with Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount both arriving.

Amrabat’s midfield minutes have been limited so far as an injury crisis means he has been featuring as a left back.

Casemiro hasn’t been at his best this season and Mount is better off further forward, so United turn to Eriksen in a deeper role.

The 31-year-old hasn’t quite been at his best and hearing that he even struggled against San Marino is far from ideal.

Erik ten Hag will need Eriksen to step it up soon, preferably against Sheffield United this weekend.
