Nani backs Ruben Amorim to succeed at Man Utd, ‘he just needs…’

Former Manchester United winger Nani is fully supportive of Ruben Amorim and backs the Portuguese coach to succeed at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim has not got the start to life at Manchester United that he would have wanted, after arriving at Old Trafford in November.

There was no ‘new manager bounce’ that some clubs witness when they change management. Instead, the team has struggled to adapt to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, and United are on course for their worst finish in Premier League history.

United fans continue to sing Amorim’s name on the terrace. They know he has a difficult job on his hands after years of terrible recruitment. There is an acceptance that it will take time to get United back to its former glories.

All eyes will be on Ineos to back Amorim in the transfer market this summer. United’s head coach will want to prioritise the addition of attacking players after watching his side struggle to score goals since he became head coach.

Despite United’s struggles, with the team sitting 14th in the Premier League, they can still salvage a turbulent campaign by winning the Europa League.

Nani believes Manchester United are in safe hands under Ruben Amorim

United may have endured a slump this season and over the past decade, but it is still the biggest club in the world in terms of the attention it attracts across the globe.

Former United winger Nani, who spent eight years at Old Trafford, won four Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Nani believes it’s only a matter of time before things click for Amorim at United.

“I think we have a great coach,” Nani told The National. “We all know that it’s a matter of time. It’s a big club.

“It’s a big pressure for everyone who comes next [after] a very good generation with a lot of success. So everyone who comes to the club, you know, they have a lot of work to do. I always say it’s a matter of time.”

Although Amorim has struggled to get results in the league since becoming United’s head coach, Nani claims the team is lacking quality. He also wants to see Amorim given time at the club.

“I think the coach is the right coach,” he added. “We have some world-class players. We need to bring some more quality and in the future we will get back to our normal life.

“I think [Amorim] is a great coach. He just needs time to adapt and learn more [about] how to play the game in the Premier League. How to put the best teams on the field in the right games because every game is different, every team is different, so he needs to learn that.

“The secret before with Ferguson was he knew which team [he needed to pick] to win that game, so I think that’s the problem.”

Nani urges United to win Europa League

Amorim has made it no secret that he is prioritising the Europa League.

If United fail to win the competition, they won’t only be without Champions League football, but they won’t be involved in any UEFA competition next season.

Nani agrees with Amorim’s decision to prioritise the Europa League.

The former United winger said: “We have a big chance to win that trophy and winning that trophy gives us the chance to get back to the Champions League.

“So it’s a big achievement for him to think about and he needs to work very hard on that.”
