Manchester United produced a real team performance to grind out three points against Everton, and opinions were split over the star player.

Benjamin Sesko scored Manchester United’s winner against Everton, once again fulfilling the role of impact substitute.

Senne Lammens marked highest in our player ratings, but it was a strong team performance with numerous contenders for the man of the match award.

There was a very split verdict post-game on MUTV over the star man, which speaks volumes about the players’ efforts in a very competitive game.

MUTV verdict on Man Utd 1-0 Everton

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown picked out the two centre-backs as his choice of joint-man of the match.

Brown was impressed with the way Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro took on the physical battle against the Toffees and came out on top.

He explained his choice to MUTV’s Matchday Review: “Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro. Because the amount of pressure that was put on them today, I thought they handled everything, and even at the beginning of the game, I thought they won the battles against who they were playing against.

“It was a really tough one. There was nothing nice in it. It was just solid defending, concentration was high, got them all away. And sometimes that’s all you want. You don’t want anything else. Just defend. And that’s what they did today.”

Fellow analyst Ben Thornley also picked out the two players he was most impressed by, naming the goalkeeper and an attacker.

He told the channel: “I’m gonna go from one extreme to the other. Senne Lammens I thought was excellent under so much pressure from so many players, even his own players at times because of the way they were jostling. I thought he was so commanding.

“I also thought Cunha, the amount of work he got through, it was his ball in our defence that led to the goal.

“But it was his tracking back and his important interceptions as well at times that were that were really key. I thought he was excellent too.”

Do you agree with Edwin van der Sar over his Lammens praise?

Lammens was also awarded the man of the match award by Sky Sport at full-time, and was praised by guest pundit Edwin van der Sar.

This was Lammens’ first away clean sheet, and his second clean sheet in his last three games.

The win means Michael Carrick’s United side have moved three points clear into fourth place, cutting the gap to Aston Villa in third.
