Manchester United forward Anthony Martial scored his first goal of the season in a win over Crystal Palace.

With £64 million spent on new signing Rasmus Hojlund, Anthony Martial is no longer Manchester United’s lead striker.

Last night he was recalled to the side, to make his first start in four matches. Martial performed well, scoring Manchester United’s third goal in a 3-0 win.

The mood in the stadium was positive and it was reflected when Martial was substituted.

Martial applauded

A fortnight ago against Brighton, there were jeers from the Old Trafford crowd when Martial came onto the pitch as a replacement for Rasmus Hojlund.

Last night Martial received an ovation from supporters, when he came off, with Hojlund playing the final 15 minutes.

He took his goal well, getting on the end of a cross from Casemiro, to score at a vital time to really kill off the game. It was his only shot at goal, and he made it count.

Verdict on Martial

There was a positive verdict on MUTV when Anthony Martial was discussed in the post-game analysis.

Former academy striker Danny Webber said: “That was the freest I’ve seen him play tonight, it was nice. I was really happy for him.

“It’s been a while since he’s started a game and scored like that, I was happy for him and the way the fans reacted to him as he came off.”

Luke Chadwick added: “He looked sharp all night, he span in behind, and it was a brilliant finish. He’s had some challenging times, he’s a gifted player.”
