MUTV pundits agree 20-year-old Manchester United star was only positive in defeat to Newcastle

Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been praised after his performance in the Carabao Cup exit against Newcastle.

Hannibal Mejbri had a difficult opening 20 minutes for Manchester United last night in the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle. It looked certain he would either be sent off, or substituted at half-time. In the end it was neither as he lasted until the 65th minute before being switched out.

As he settled into the game Hannibal regained composure and worked hard defensively, at one point making a crucial interception inside his own box.

Even on his limited time in possession, Hannibal managed to create one chance, and he did win three of the four tackles he contested.

Hannibal Mejbri praised

Even though Hannibal lives life on the edge, there are some positive attributes he brings to the team, and on MUTV post-game his performance was actually praised.

MUTV pundit Danny Simpson explained: “Hannibal was the only positive, even though he gets a yellow card, his energy, he gets around the pitch.

“Sometimes we have asked why he doesn’t come on. He gives you the basics, energy and legs, I’ve been a young player here myself that’s what you have to do.”

Simpson added that he believes Hannibal must start in the next Manchester United game, on Saturday away to Fulham.

He said: “Based off tonight’s basis, Hannibal has to start again. Hannibal is the one who has to play, for his energy and desire, and some other lads have to look at that and do the same.”

Ben Thornley agreed Hannibal had caught his eye for positive reasons, commenting of United’s performance: “Except for Hannibal, I can’t see who [from tonight] is going to give the manager a headache.”

Erik ten Hag gave him confidence

Erik ten Hag was faced with a choice at half-time, with most expecting Hannibal to be taken off at the break to avoid a red card, especially when Sofyan Amrabat was seen warming up.

But it was Casemiro who was hooked instead, with Ten Hag sticking with Hannibal until his eventual substitution in the 65th minute.

Ten Hag trusted the 20-year-old to keep his discipline, and he did. Hannibal was able to tread the line and avoid getting sent off, and while there is much more required from the youngster, the MUTV analysts raise a fair point that Hannibal does bring some important assets into the team, which have been very lacking in recent weeks.
