Manchester United have lost three games in a row in all competitions and four of the opening six games.
Per Opta, this is the worst Manchester United start to the season since 1986/87 when Ron Atkinson was in charge. This time there is no Sir Alex Ferguson waiting in the wings. The club must plough on and back Erik ten Hag to turn the team’s form around.
To do so, Ten Hag needs improvement from his big players, most of who have been very inconsistent, or just downright poor, so far.
One who has attracted criticism is Casemiro, who has set the highest standards in the past, and is a little below them right now, despite his late brace last night.

Dion Dublin backs Casemiro
While Casemiro’s form has been questioned early on this season, MUTV pundit Dion Dublin says he is confident the Brazilian will soon be back to his very best.
Dublin told the channel’s post-match show: “He’s a class act, having won this trophy five times. He’ll probably hold his hands up and say ‘I’m not where I want to be.’
“He’s off it, still finding his feet. I have no worries about Casemiro. He’s brave as a lion. He’s one player I just won’t worry about.”
Dublin’s message is clear, that Casemiro will fight through this dip in form and recover to a point where he is back to his best. For Manchester United’s sake, we hope it is sooner rather than later.
Casemiro is Manchester United’s top scorer
The midfielder’s late brace against Bayern means he is Manchester United’s top scorer this season with three goals, also netting against Nottingham Forest.
No other player has more than one goal, a statistic Manchester United fans will hope changes.
United do need midfielders to chip in and score, however, and on another night, Casemiro’s brace would have salvaged a point or better.
That leads us back to the main concern, Manchester United’s leaky backline. Casemiro is no longer a one-man shield for the defence.
Hopefully new signing Sofyan Amrabat will be fit soon, allowing United to both rotate Casemiro and provide him with more support, with a more balanced and resilient midfield.
