Manchester United beat Lyon in pre-season with young players and Donny van de Beek starring in the 1-0 win.

Van de Beek volleyed in a cross from youngster Dan Gore, who was one the stars of the second half.

The 2022 FA Youth Cup winner was picked out for praise after a dynamic performance in central midfield against the Ligue 1 side.

Kobbie Mainoo, a starter, was another highlighted by former United academy talent Danny Simpson, a pundit for MUTV.

Kobbie Mainoo praise

Kobbie Mainoo, 18, stood out against Leeds last week and continued where he left off as part of a three man midfield with Hannibal Mejbri and Mason Mount.

Simpson said he was very impressed, commenting: “Up close and personal I thought he was fantastic, strong, athletic, he’s calm on the ball.

“From a tactical point of view he wasn’t just saying as six, he was going into left-back position, the right-back position, to give an angle.

“For a young lad he looks very comfortable. It looks like it suits him playing in a Manchester United shirt. Superb.”

Mainoo is a player who manager Erik ten Hag is very keen on, and this has shown, with the teenager making his first team debut at 17 last season.

Dan Gore praise

Dan Gore was particularly impressive in the second half and provided the assist for Donny van de Beek’s well taken volleyed winner.

Simpson said: “I thought Dan Gore epitomised everything United are about. Aggressive on the front foot.

“It is great to see Gore and Mainoo play at such a high level at such a young age.”

Fellow pundit Ben Thornley was also impressed with Dan Gore. He added, “Without the goal, I thought he was all action. He was everything that Lyon’s midfield wasn’t.”

Gore and Mainoo were part of the FA Youth Cup winning team in 2022, along with Isak Hansen-Aaroen, who provided an assist against Leeds, and was lively against Lyon too.

United have real talent coming through the ranks, and it is great to see them getting opportunities, and taking them.
