Manchester United defender Luke Shaw gave away a late penalty which led to a 1-0 defeat to Brighton.

What was looking like a positive night for Luke Shaw turned into a night the defender would rather forget.

Defending a late set piece, Shaw was seen by the cameras with his arm above his head, handling the ball.

Referee Andre Marriner went to a VAR check and awarded the spot-kick immediately. Alexis Mac Allister scored and won it 1-0 for the hosts.

Reaction to Luke Shaw error

MUTV pundit Danny Webber told the channel after the game that he saw immediately that Shaw knew he had made a mistake.

Webber explained: “You could see when it’s going to the replay, he was disappointed. He knows it’s hit his hand.”

The former United trainee made a point to praise the left-back’s performance, he had been one of the team’s best players on the night.

He said: “I thought Luke Shaw was outstanding throughout the game. He’s done outstanding as a centre-back. It’s not his position, he’s played like it is his position.”

Erik ten Hag weighs in

Macnhester United manager Erik ten Hag was not convinced with the performance of the referee, and pointed out that the official had made an error awarding a free-kick against Shaw in the lead-up to the goal.

Ten Hag told club media: “I’ve seen that it is handball and maybe he is out of balance. Maybe he got a push from the back, but I can’t see because there are so many players in [the way].

“My anger is about the free-kick before, because it was never a free-kick [against Shaw on Enciso] and there was so many bad tackles tonight where there was not a whistle.”
