Manchester United produced one of the best performances of the season to secure a 3-0 away win over Athletic Club.
After previous knockout rounds against Real Sociedad and Lyon saw Manchester United draw the first legs, expectations were tempered heading into the tie with Athletic Club.
Manchester United made light work of these La Liga opponents, winning 3-0 away from home to set up a less tense second leg.
Of course after a mini-collapse against Lyon you can never be certain – but 3-0 is a fantastic advantage to secure, and Manchester United have one foot set in the Europa League final already.

Manchester United did not go for the kill
Manchester United had secured a 3-0 lead at half-time, with a goal from Casemiro and two from Bruno Fernandes.
One came via the penalty spot, with Athletic Club centre-back Daniel Vivian sent off midway through the first half.
And this was the one slight negative from Manchester United’s stunning 3-0 win, that the scoreline was not even higher.
Despite attempting to score in the second half, United could not find a fourth goal and settled for keeping it tight and securing a clean sheet.
And this was the one negative raised on MUTV’s post-match reaction, with former defender David May believing United should have killed the tie off.
He told the channel: “I thought we should have gone for them, score four or five, put it to bed.
“The fact that you 3-0 up at half-time and you’re cruising, your mindset might be different, but watching it as we were, you are just thinking ‘go on have another couple of gambles’.
“They were there for the right doing. I think we could have got another couple of goals. But 3-0 is absolutely unbelievable.”
His comments were echoed by Ben Thornley, who told the channel: “I don’t know if they are disappointed the second half playing against 10 men they didn’t make the scoreline more handsome, but if you had said 3-0 before you’d have snatch your hand off.”
Ruben Amorim cautious with victory
Speaking after the full-time whistle, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim expressed delight with the result.
He was cautious, warning that the job is not done. He told TNT Sports: “Any game can change with one situation.
“We had an opportunity to score one more. This is not done and they can do the same at Old Trafford.
“They’re really strong and intense. We need to be prepared.”
